Do you dream?
That the world will know your name?
So tell me your name.
And do you care
About all the little things
Or anything at all?
“It’s over, Hanekoma.” The Angels said in unison. “You’ve gone too far. You brought a human here. You took a child from our possession that could potentially be dangerous in the human realm. You killed one of our own, as well as a human.” The accusations continued until Sanae Hanekoma almost couldn’t take it anymore. Yes, he’d done all these things, but for good reason. He had good intentions…he never meant for Kai to die. He knew the others of his kind would hear these thoughts, so he said nothing out loud.
“We’ve thought about it long and hard, Hanekoma…and we’re afraid it’s time for you to go.” These words made Sanae’s blood run cold. Go? As in…he was to Fall again? Falling wasn’t so bad. He’d been forced from the Higher Plane before, and had survived. His Fall had given him Miana…his beautiful Miana. Despite the situation, a gentle smile came to his lips. The Angels began to murmur angrily.
“No, you won’t fall.” One of the Angels said in monotone. “You will Fray.” With these seven words, Sanae’s heart fell. Fraying was different from Falling… a much worse fate than he could imagine. In the history of the Higher Plane, only three Angels have Frayed.
“But your Grace’s, I implore you…give me one more chance.” Sanae pleaded in a soft, barely controlled voice. Every Angel feared the Fray, and had feared such punishment for centuries. Dona had been Frayed back when he first came to the Higher Plane for killing another Angel. Aiden had suffered this as well, for something so utterly horrifying, that the Angels dare not speak of it. His Fraying had been carried out near the American Revolutionary War.
Then there had been Akira. She was like Sanae, kind hearted and longing to be with the humans. Her crime had been the worst above all others, despite her love for the lower planes…she had told a human of the existence of Angels, the UG, and all the secrets we worked so hard to keep. She had begged for forgiveness, but no mercy had been shown to her. She’d been Frayed, just before World War II.
Sanae Hanekoma stood in her shoes now, knowing her fear and her disparity to be forgiven. He was an Angel who had broken the rules, and would receive no absolution. For so many years he had walked the Higher Plane, as well as Earth, seeking happiness. Now, when he’s finally found it, he is to be Frayed. Could his kind be any crueler?
I wanna feel
All the chemicals inside,
I wanna feel.
I wanna sunburn
Just to know I’m alive,
To know I’m alive.
“The risk is too great.” The Angels said in one voice. “We cannot allow you to continue putting the Higher Plane in danger. You will be Frayed after the end of the current Reaper’s Game, in three days. This is your sentence, and now you must go. You are not to enter the Higher Plane again.” With these words, the Fallen
Angel was sent back to his home on Earth.
However, Sanae’s mind was buzzing with too many thoughts for him to notice, and fear seized him. He was never again going to set foot in the Higher Plane. He would never feel the wind on his wings as he soared over the city, or Miana’s hands touching the sensitive feathers. He would never hear Music again; he was deaf to Miana’s, Kiseki’s, even his own Music. Even as he tried to summon his wings into existence, they failed him. His power was locked too tightly for him to break. The news sank in at this moment that his punishment was real. He’d be Frayed in three days.
Three days. Sanae had three days to tell his beautiful Miana how much he loved her. Three days to make Kiseki, his exquisite daughter, smile. Three days to thank Wren for his kindness. Three days-Sanae didn’t continue his train of thought. He knew that if he did, then he’d never have the courage to face the Fraying when the time came.
He stood shakily to his feet, going to Miana’s side as quickly as his feel allowed him. Without explanation, he held her and the baby close, hiding the resignation in his eyes. “My beautiful girls. I love you, never forget that,” Came a hoarse whisper from his lips. When he felt Miana’s free arm around his back, the tears he’d been holding back sprang free. He had three days to make the most of…he had to start now.
~~
Do you believe?
In the day that you were born,
Tell me, do you believe?
And do you know?
That every day’s the first,
Of the rest of your life?
Sanae held Kiseki in his arms, his fingers running through her black curls gently. He sang to her quietly, snippets of her Music that came to his memory. She would be a year old soon, and he would miss it. He would miss her birthday, her first Christmas, her first words, everything. Now it wasn’t the Fraying that he feared…it was the precious moments that would be forever lost to him.
“My beautiful little girl...” He whispered reverently, as if praying that he could stay. Of course, what good would that do? If anything, the Angels would make his punishment worse. “My beautiful Kiseki…my miracle…” How could they take him from his family? After being alone all this time, he had found his reason for eternity. How could the Angels be so cruel?
This was his last day with his beautiful family. Miana knew he was leaving, she had to. She knew he was leaving soon and not coming back, and yet…she stayed by him. She stayed by his side, comforting him and loving him through his inner turmoil. Not a tear left her eyes as she stood by him. However, he knew that when the time came, her tears would escape. The three of them had one last night. One more night to be with them, and all he could do was make the most of it.
~~
This is to one last day in the shadows
And to know a brother’s love.
This is to New York City Angels,
And the rivers of our blood.
This is to all of us.
To all of us.
“The time has come, Hanekoma.” The Angel’s voices rang as one as he arrived with Miana next to him. “The time has come for you to be Frayed.” Frayed. Sanae met each pair of eyes silently as he sank to his knees as ritual dictated. Miana sank next to him, taking his hand to comfort both him, and herself as well.
One of the Angels stepped forward, holding his hands up to silence the crowd of winged men and women. “Here we gather on this moonlit night to punish he who has done wrong.” He called out in a loud, ringing voice. “Sanae Hanekoma, you are accused of taking a child from the Higher Plane against out laws, causing the death of another Angel, and revealing our existence to humans. You have been sentenced to a Fraying. Do you accept these words as the truth?”
With a deep breath, Sanae looked at Miana quietly, his sunglasses removed from their usual perch. With his eyes alone, he told her to be silent, and to keep control of her actions. If she was killed by protecting him, he’d shoulder the guilt forevermore. With a hoarse voice, he replied to the Angel. “I understand and accept my punishment.”
The Angels spoke again in one voice. “Very well, Sanae Hanekoma... Let the Fraying begin.” As they said these words, each Angel reached out with one hand, each palm turned upward towards his back. Sanae stiffened in pain as the Angels rose their hands in unison towards their faces.
Sanae’s back arched, excruciating agony racking his body. His wings came into view, but instead of appearing as they always had, they grew out of his back, inch by inch. Miana gripped his hand, unable to watch as his wings were ripped from his shoulder blades.
Unfathomable amounts of Soul ripped away with them, looking like frayed rope. When the wings disconnected from him, Sanae cried out with such heartbreaking agony that Miana began to cry with him. There was no wound on Sanae’s back as his wings vanished in a crack of static. Sanae fell to his side, his breathing ragged and heavy.
Don’t tell me if I’m dying
‘Cause I don’t wanna know.
If I can’t see the sun,
Maybe I should go.
Don’t wake me ‘cause I’m dreaming
Of Angels on the moon
Where everyone you know
Never leaves too soon.
The Angels vanished to the Higher Plane, leaving Sanae and Miana alone in the streets of New York City. With tears in her eyes, Miana helped Sanae to his feet, helping him get to their garden not far away. Once inside the walls, she helped him lie down on the cool stone fountain, diamond light sparkling around them.
Yeah, you can tell me all your thoughts about
The stars that fill polluted skies,
And show me where you run to
When no one’s left to take your side.
Don’t tell me where the road ends
‘Cause I don’t wanna know.
No, I don’t wanna know.
And as Sanae looked up into the night sky, watching the stars twinkling above him, he felt oddly at peace. Miana was there with him, her hand running through his hair in a soothing gesture of love. He reached up, touching her face gently. He marveled at how soft her skin was, and at how wet the tears on her cheeks were. She leaned down to press a kiss to his lips, but Sanae was too weak to kiss back. When she raised back up, his eyes were closed. A peaceful smile graced his lips while Miana began to hum softly to him, a lilting melody that was somber, and at the same time wonderfully beautiful. He listened to his Music through her, breathing her name with his last breath.
“Miana…I’ll love you…until the world ends...”
Don’t tell me if I’m dying…
Don’t tell me if I’m dying.
That the world will know your name?
So tell me your name.
And do you care
About all the little things
Or anything at all?
