It was Christmas in the ShinRa building once again, and Maxina was sitting in her room, looking a little skeptical. There were four Turks, three Nobodies, four dogs and a little boy were going to be there, and she had no idea how all of them would get along. And what if something bad happened? What if Saix came back, or what if…?
Her thoughts were cut off suddenly by a soft knock on her door. The Nobody stood up, pulling the door open to reveal Vexel, standing there with his hands in the pockets of his jacket. He had his hair somewhat tamed, and wore black pants with a white hoodie.
“Hey…came to pick you up, Max.” He smiled lightly, a half grin to complement his laughing eyes. Maxina smiled back, running her hand through her straightened hair slightly.
“Thanks, Vex…I’m a little nervous, I guess.” She sighed, answering his unasked question easily. “I’m not sure how long my control will hold up, y’know?”
Maxina had been a vampire for all of two weeks, and hadn’t been around many people since then. She knew that Reno’s blood called to her the most, but she had no idea just how bad it would be if he cut himself. If she attacked him during the party, it would end in disaster.
Vexel understood, and sat down against her bed. “You’ll be fine, Maxina. Zel and I both believe in you…don’t worry about it, okay?” He gave her a teasing smile. “I’ll watch your back. I’ll even hold you back if it comes down to it.”
Maxina smiled once more, and sat down next to him. “Thanks, Vexel…it’s a little hard to deal with though, especially around Reno.” She chewed on her bottom lip slightly, out of habit.
Vexel reached into his pocket for a moment, before pulling out something for her. “Here…I think I wanna give this to you a little early.” He held out a little wrapped box for her, which was only about the size of his palm.
Maxina took the box from him curiously, and pulled the lid off with a quiet gasp. Inside the box was a little ice statue of her, every last detail perfect. It was even in color, shimmering like glass.
“It won’t break or melt...I hope you like it.” Vexel said softly as she looked at it. Before he could say anything else, Maxina wrapped her arms around his neck in a gentle hug. “I love it,
Vexel...it’s amazing.” She murmured. As she said this, she pressed her lips to his gently and quickly in a grateful kiss.
I got a funny feeling
The moment that your lips touched mine
Something shot right through me
My heart skipped a beat in time
Vexel looked surprised, eyes widening slightly in shock at the feel of her lips against his. Maxina stood up and put the little statue on her desk as Vexel remained in place, stunned. She’d kissed him…she had actually kissed him.
“You coming, Vexel?” Maxina smiled from the doorway. Vexel stood up, absolutely elated. He felt like electricity was running through his entire body, energizing and exciting him. Did this mean that she felt the same as he did? Did this mean…she loved him?
He followed Maxina into the large recreation room, which had been filled with holly, mistletoe, a tree, and piles of gifts underneath it. Tables filled with punch, snacks and different food lined the walls. Other tables with seats around them surrounded a dance floor as music played in the background. Multicolored lights filled the room, and Vexel was shocked to see how the light played on Maxina’s skin and made it glow. She was beautiful in that moment, he realized, and always had been…He had no idea what had taken him so long to see this.
There's a different feel about you tonight
It's got me thinkin' lots of crazy things
I even think I saw a flash of light
It felt like electricity
Maxina looked around the room, still quite tense about the situation. Now that she was here, what if she lost control? Before she could consider the consequences, a hand rested on her shoulder. She turned to see Reno, in his usual messy attire. He smiled down at her, pulling her out to the dance floor.
Vexel watched as the two danced to a fast paced, fun song. Both were laughing, joking, and stealing an occasional kiss from the other. An odd pang of jealousy shot through his chest, surprising him. As he watched them dance to song after song, the pangs got worse until he couldn’t stand to sit down on the side any longer. Vexel stood quietly, walking towards them, and tapped Reno on the shoulder. Maxina looked up as Reno did, both surprised at Vexel’s sudden appearance.
“Can I dance with her?” He asked Reno quietly. The redhead nodded, looking slightly surprised. As he left the dance floor and moved towards the food tables, Vexel turned to Maxina with a small, almost shy smile. He held out a hand as the lights dimmed and a slow song began. Maxina placed her hand in his, and the two began dancing.
You shouldn't kiss me like this
Unless you mean it like that
Cause I'll just close my eyes
And I won't know where I'm at
We'll get lost on this dance floor
Spinnin' around
And around
And around
And around
Maxina spun with him as the song continued, watching the way he would look at her. She felt the way he held her, like she meant the world and more to him. It felt so different than what she was used to, but at the same time…it felt right. How was that possible?
“You’re a good dancer.” Vexel leaned forward, saying this quietly in Maxina’s ear as they swayed to the music. The Nobody couldn’t help the rush of blood that flooded her cheeks in a blush as he said this.
“You are too, Vexel.” She murmured in reply, leaning back in a dip as he leaned over her, meeting her gaze. A small smile graced his lips as he pulled her back upright. She smiled back and kissed his cheek, in the same friendly manner as she had in her room.
A shock went through Vexel as her lips touched his skin, and he helplessly turned his head just slightly, so that their lips met. Maxina’s eyes widened when he did, but she didn’t pull away, too surprised to move.
His lips were like warm velvet, feeling like the fire he held within. Hers were soft and yielding as the tender brush became a firmer press. Maxina’s eyes slipped closed after a moment, as did Vexel’s.
As the moment grew longer, Maxina kissed back softly before pulling away, meeting his gaze. Violet eyes met a blue and a green, a questioning murmur of sound escaping Maxina’s lips. Before she could speak, Vexel pulled her gently into their dance again.
They're all watchin' us now
They think we're falling in love
They'd never believe we're just friends
When you kiss me like this
I think you mean it like that
If you do maybe kiss me again
The dance ended all too soon, and the two friends looked at one another in peaceful silence. Maxina felt a ghost of his lips still on hers and realized something in that moment. That kiss had been more than just a friendly exchange. He loved her…and she loved him as well.
But how? How had she fallen in love with her best friend? How had she failed to notice his beautiful eyes and kindness until now? She couldn’t help but wonder if she’d ended up with the wrong man when she began dating Reno.
Everybody swears we make the perfect pair
But dancing is as far as it goes
Girl you've never moved me quite
The way you moved me tonight
I just wanted you to know
I just wanted you to know
A hand rested on her shoulder, and Maxina turned to see Reno himself, smiling softly. Thank goodness, he’d not seen their kiss. With a quiet word to Vexel, Reno pulled Maxina towards him gently, dancing with her once more.
You shouldn't kiss me like this
Unless you mean it like that
Cause I'll just close my eyes
And I won't know where I'm at
We'll get lost on this dance floor
Spinnin' around
And around

Vexel watched as Maxina danced, but this time was different. She missed steps, and the smile on her wonderful lips was different. She was obviously distracted, but…was it him that had caused the change? Did she return his feelings, or did she not want anything to do with him anymore? As Maxina met his gaze once more, he saw a reflection of his love for her in her eyes. A quiet, loving smile crossed her lips as Vexel realized that she felt the same. But…would she act on the feelings? Would they ever end up together as he’d long wished they would?
They're all watchin' us now
They think we're falling in love
They'd never believe we're just friends
When you kiss me like this
I think you mean it like that
If you do baby kiss me again
Kiss me again
