A present for Maxie when she gets back~
When she had first come to the mansion, she had been scared. She had been fearful and lost, and treated like little more than a prisoner. Her only friends were the animals that wandered the castle, trying to make her as comfortable as possible, as opposed to her keeper. Vexel was as much a beast as he appeared- white scales and sharp fangs and claws that could have easily torn her apart...but now...He was different.
The two walked together out on the mansion's snow-covered grounds, smiling, talking, laughing. Vexel held out his paws a bit hopefully, smiling. Maxina gave him a handful of bird feed, watching him.
There's something sweet, and almost kind...But he was mean and he was coarse and unrefined...
A few birds hopped towards him, and he held out his hands hopefully, scaring them away. He slowly moved closer to the birds, trying again.
And now he's dear, and so unsure...I wonder why I didn't see it there before.
Maxina smiled and shook her head slightly, walking over to him. She knelt beside him, placed some more feed in his hands and scattered it about on the snow. Hesitantly, a little bird hopped into his hands. His smile, so happy and childlike, made Maxina's cheeks turn faintly pink, glancing at him.
Vexel smiled, a few more birds beginning to approach him. She glanced this way...I thought I saw...and when we touched, she didn't shudder at my paw. He hesitated, his smile fading as Maxina walked away. No it can't be, I'll just ignore...but then she's never looked at me that way before.
He looked up and Maxina gave him a faint smile, slipping behind a tree. She leaned against it, a bit startled with herself. New, and a bit alarming, who'd have ever thought that this could be? After a moment, she peeked around the tree and gave a slight sigh, smiling. True, that he's no Prince Charming... Vexel was practically covered in birds, and he didn't seem to know what to make of it. They all flew off at once, and he looked a bit startled. Maxina smiled. But there's something in him that I simply didn't see... Vexel smiled in Maxina's direction, only to take a snowball to the face. He shook it off, looking at her curiously. She laughed and he grinned mischievously, gathering a large mound of snow.
From a high window, two cats and a small dog watched the scene.
"Well who'd have thought?" Zeluxia laughed slightly.
"Well bless my soul," Liz added, watching.
"Well who'd have known?" Demaix said, surprised.
"Well who indeed?" Liz smiled.
"And who'd have guessed they'd come together on their own?" Zeluxia turned to the others, smiling.
"It's so peculiar!" Liz agreed.
"We'll wait and see a few days more," they said together, hopeful. "There may be something there that wasn't there before."
Vexel placed Maxina's cloak gently on the hook, sitting beside her in front of the large fire. She opened the book for him, and the two scooted closer.
The servants watched from the doorway, smiling gently.
Demaix turned to Liz and Yoshiya, smiling. "You know, perhaps there's something there that wasn't there before."
Yoshiya, confused, hopped slightly. "What?" Liz smiled.
"There may be something there that wasn't there before," she said quietly. Yoshiya frowned.
"What's there, Lizzy?" he asked, confused. Liz shushed him gently.
"I'll tell you when you're older," she said quietly.
