For Good - Songfic - Riley/Marquille
Run, Riley! Marquille’s voice broke the silence of the campsite, rousing Riley from her doze. She jumped to her feet, nearly tripping as she did so. She pulled her shoes on, not bothering with her socks as she looked up for Marquille. He wasn’t too far off, fighting off the three Silhouettes from the lake house – Alexia, James and Darin. Panic crossed Riley’s features as the tallest of them looked at her, a feral grin on his tattooed face.
Darin approached her at such a speed, that Riley had no time to respond. He touched her shoulders, gripping them, his terrifying tattoos moving over her eyes. She stood frozen in front of him, the tattoos spreading over her body and preventing movement. Marquille’s growl came from farther away, signaling his change from human being to tiger, but Riley couldn’t yell for him; couldn’t scream for him to run.
With a feral snarl, Marquille lunged at Darin, ripping Riley from his grip. The tattoos flowed back up the Silhouette’s arms and torso, a growl escaping his lips as he regained his stance. Riley backed away, scrambling to get back to her feet. Alexia and James lurched forward, cornering Marquille. The female grabbed for him, while the male tried to grab him by the ears.
Marquille growled menacingly, sinking his cerulean teeth into James’ hand. The male Silhouette howled with pain, jerking away with a hiss. Alexis growled, while Darin barked an order.
“Get out of here. We’ll take care of them later!” He shouted, already taking off away from the two. Alexia shot a glare at Riley, before pulling James away at a dead run. Riley pulled herself up unsteadily, biting her lip. Marquille shifted easily back to the humanoid shape he could maintain, running a nervous hand through his azure locks of hair.
Are you alright, Riley? He demanded softly, touching her cheek with a tender hand. Affection shone from his sapphire orbs as he pressed a kiss to her forehead softly. Riley kept her own cobalt eyed downcast, looking at the marks left on her arms from the burning tattoos.
“I’m limited…” She whispered softly. Marquille looked down at her, eyes filled with confusion. What, Riley? What did you say?
“I’m limited.” Riley said a little louder. “Just look at me…I’m limited.”
She pulled softly out of his embrace, looking down as she pulled her jacket on. “And just look at you. You can do all I couldn’t do…I can’t…”
What are you… Riley cut him off with a small, pleading wave of her hand. “It’s up to you.” She began softly.
“I’ve heard it said…that people come into our lives for a reason.” Riley straightened up, meeting Marquille’s gaze. He approached her softly, but she didn’t allow him to touch her. “Bringing something we must learn, and we’re led to those who help us most to grow if we let them.” Riley touched his cheek softly. “You’ve helped me learn. You’ve allowed me to grow.”
“But…I don’t know if I believe that’s true.” With a sad sigh, Riley wrapped her arms around herself, looking down. “But I know….I know, I’m who I am today…” She met his gaze quietly. “Because I knew you..”
What are you saying, Riley? Marquille whispered, pain obvious in his eyes. The brunet said nothing for a moment. “It’s like….like a comet pulled from orbit, as it…passes a sun?” She mumbled softly, trying to explain. “Or like…like a stream that meets a boulder, halfway through the woods?”
She shook her head, sighing. “Look…who can say if I’ve changed me for the better, but…because I’ve known you, Marquille…I’m changed for good.”
You’re going back, aren’t you? Marquille bit his lip, tears in his eyes. To Traverse Town. You’re leaving me to find them on my own.
“I’m just holding you back, Marquille. Don’t you see that?” She whispered quietly. “I have to go…to give you the chance to find them. And I can find Michelle…and my dad…maybe we’ll see each other again, but…”
It well may be that we may never meet again, at least in this lifetime. Marquille whispered pleadingly. Riley met his gaze quietly, and he knew; he couldn’t talk her out of this. He was going to have to let her go, and that broke his heart. It killed him, but…he would let her go.
“Goodbye, Marquille.” Riley whispered softly. “G-Goodbye.” She turned, beginning to walk away. As her form faded into darkness, Marquille called out once more.
But let me say before we part…so much of me… it’s made from what I learned from you. His voice made her stop, tears falling down her cheeks. She turned to see him standing by the tree she’d been leaning against, pain and resolution in his eyes.
You’ll be with me.[/i] He nodded along with his words, passionate in them. Like a handprint on my heart.
Slowly, he stepped towards her, taking her into his arms gently. And now whatever way our stories end… he whispered softly. I know you have re-written mine by being my friend… Like a ship blown from its mooring, by a wind off the sea. His voice was soft and resigned as he used an analogy as she had. Or a seed dropped by a sky-bird in a distant wood. Who can say if you’ve changed me for the better, but because I’ve known you...
“You’ve been changed for good?” Riley whispered, finishing his sentence. “And..just to clear the air? I ask for forgiveness for what I’ve done that you blame me for.” She whispered, referring to the change that had physically taken place in both of them.
But then…I guess we know there’s blame to share… Marquille said softly. And both of them met each other’s gazes. “But it doesn’t matter anymore.” They said in unison. With sad smiles, the analogies were repeated, whispered in reverence for the words by both Riley and Marquille.
“Like a ship blown from its mooring
by a wind off the sea.
Like a seed dropped by a bird in the wood.”
Like a comet pulled from orbit
As it passes a sun.
Like a stream that meets a boulder
Passing through the wood.
Riley pulled from his arms after the two shared a tender, tearful kiss. “Who can say if I’ve changed you for the better.” She whispered.
He finished her sentiments softly. But because you knew me, and I knew you…we have been changed for good.
Riley nodded, sniffling. “I hope you find your friends, Marquille…I won’t forget you, I promise.” She pulled away, walking away once more.
And I, you. Marquille whispered. I love you, Riley.
These words made her hesitate. “I love you too, Marquille. I always will.” She said, just loud enough for him to hear. Before she could change her mind, Riley ran away from him, tears falling to the mossy ground beneath her feet.
Marquille stared after her for a long time, before his own tears fell to the ground, mingling with those that she’d left behind.
