It was dark and rather empty in Seventh Heaven that night. Three University girls sat near the door, laughing and enjoying their fruity little drinks. A couple sat in the back, leaning close and talking quietly, oblivious to the rest of the bar. And one man sat at the bar, tapping his fingers lightly against the bottle in his hand.
He was a regular who ordered the same thing every night. Tonight, however, he ordered much more than he normally would, which surprised the woman behind the bar. He wore a dark blue-black suit that was a bit on the shabby side, with an untucked white shirt that was halfway unbuttoned. Everyone around recognized these clothes to represent Shinra's men - The Turks - and avoided him, lest they be on his "hit list".
The man ran a hand through his scruffy red hair, glancing forward to the group of girls by the door. One had short blonde hair that bounced slightly when she laughed. She was short, and a bit on the skinny side with bright green eyes framed by a pair of round glasses. Next to her, the tallest of the group was leaning back in her seat some. She had long brown hair that she'd pulled into a loose bun. She had a round face with thin lips, a small nose and bright blue eyes that strayed to the street several times, as if looking for something.
The last girl had scruffy shoulder-length black hair, which she kept running her hand through by habit. She said something to her friends in a low melodic voice, who laughed happily. The Turk shook slightly, unable to pry his mako-enhanced eyes away from her. How familiar the girl's hair was...he wondered if the eyes were the same color as hers. Did her lips hold the same little half-grin that he had grown to long for?
Thankfully, the girl's face was hidden from the redhead's view, giving him a respite from his thoughts and his curiosity for a moment. He turned away, tapping the table and looking at the bartender. With a shaky sigh, he asked for another drink.
The bartender looked over at him, frowning disapprovingly. "I don't think so, Reno. You've had enough for two grown men. i've already taken your keys, but if you have anymore, I'll have to insist you stay here, and I don't want you stuck here."
Reno looked at the dark eyed barkeep, forcing a grin onto his wary face. "C'mon, Tif...when've you ever seen me stuck anywhere, yo?" He backpedalled with a slight wince when she snorted and raised her eyebrow at him. "Oh, c'mon...that time doesn't count."
The grin fell from Reno's face, revealing the pain behind the façade he'd held for so long. "Please, Tifa...just one more, okay?"
The disapproving scowl faded from Tifa's face. She'd never seen the playful man before her look so distraught - not since the day she'd met him, anyway. With a slight nod, she slid a bottle his way, which he caught easily and took a deep swig from.
Tifa walked quietly towards him, leaning down to put her elbows on the table, resting her chin in her hand. "What happened, Reno?" She said quietly. The redhead flinched slightly, and stayed quiet for a long minute. Finally his shoulders slumped, a sigh escaping his lips.
He told Tifa about her: how the two had met, how she recieved a job working with him at Shinra, their first kiss, everything. His voice faltered slightly when he told of the thing that she'd fallen in love with. The creature who looked and acted human, even bled like a human, but was jus a machine. He told of how he'd found them one night after work - eyes closed, lips together, oblivious to his presence - How she'd left him...for a machine.
Reno didn't realize that tears were running down his face until Tifa reached out and wiped one away. Surprised, he touched his face, pulling back to look at his wet fingers. The longer he looked, the more his vision blurred until silent sobs shook his lithe frame. For weeks he'd held them back, running from the pain behind closed doors with dark haired girls - but when the sun rose, his pain returned, forcing him to look for another willing girl. He could no longer hold them back as Tifa watched, pained for him.
"Why'd she leave me, Tifa?" he whispered after a moment. "What did I do to make her leave?"
Tifa met his gaze quietly, putting a gentle hand on his shoulder. "It's nothing you did..she's a fool. Don't let her hurt you like this, Reno. She's nobody."
Reno was silent for a long moment. Tears hit the tabletop as he looked down, pulling something from his pocket. It was a picture taken not long ago of the two of them, holding a star-shaped fruit between them. Both were taking a bite at the same time, their eyes on one another as he was snapping the picture.
"She may be just a Nobody.." He whispered, touching her face - her beautiful face - in the photo. "She may be just a Nobody...but she was my Somebody."
